FAQs
What is the Seniors & Families Initiative?
The Seniors & Families Initiative is a community program by Happy Home Solutions, a Canadian non-profit dedicated to helping seniors and their loved ones create safe, comfortable, and prepared homes for every stage of life. We provide education, resources, and trusted connections to make aging at home easier and more dignified.
Who can benefit from this program?
It’s for seniors, adult children, caregivers, and community leaders who want to understand how to support healthy aging. We also work with churches, community groups, and local partners who want to host information sessions for their members.
What do you mean by “dependency” in seniors?
“Dependency” describes the point when a senior begins to rely on others for everyday needs — either physically, emotionally, or financially.
There are generally three types:
Partial Dependency: The person can still live somewhat independently but may need help with meals, cleaning, or transportation.
Full Dependency: The person requires regular assistance with daily activities like bathing, dressing, or mobility.
Medical Dependency: The person needs ongoing medical supervision or specialized care due to illness, dementia, or limited mobility.
Recognizing these stages early helps families plan and adapt before a crisis occurs.
Support can vary widely depending on health, mobility, and environment, but often includes:
Physical assistance: mobility aids, grab bars, wheelchair ramps, or accessible bathrooms.
Health support: medication management, physiotherapy, or in-home nursing care.
Social and emotional support: companionship, community visits, and mental health check-ins.
Financial and administrative help: understanding benefits, tax credits, and housing options.
Our initiative helps families identify which supports fit their situation — and connects them to verified resources in their area.
What kind of support do dependent seniors require?
What kinds of topics do you cover?
We focus on real-life challenges families face as loved ones age, including:
Preparing the home for accessibility and safety
Recognizing early signs of dependency or cognitive decline
Accessing government grants, tax credits, and funding for seniors
Managing health, mobility, and emergency preparedness
Emotional and financial planning for later life
How can families tell when it’s time to make home modifications?
Signs include:
Frequent trips or falls
Difficulty getting in or out of the shower
Trouble climbing stairs or reaching high cupboards
Increasing confusion or forgetfulness
Fear of being alone or left behind in an emergency
Do you offer in-person sessions or just online materials?
Both. We host community information sessions at churches, senior centres, and local organizations, as well as provide online articles and guides through our website’s Community Insights section.
Is there a cost to participate?
No. Our initiative is completely free to participants. Funding and support come from community donations, partner organizations, and volunteers who believe in building safer, happier homes for seniors.
How can churches or community groups get involved?
We welcome partnerships.
Churches and community organizations can:
Host an information session for their members
Promote our educational materials or donation drives
Help identify seniors who may benefit from our resources
Yes.
Churches, community centres, and local nonprofits can host free educational sessions for their members.
We provide the speakers, materials, and guidance — you provide the space and community connection.
